The Reluctant Entrepreneur

The economic downturn seems to have created a whole new category of business person – the reluctant or involuntary entrepreneur. These people are not fired up by a burning desire to go and be their own boss.

No, they have fallen into self employment as a result of not being able to find work (or enough work) in their usual profession. The number of ‘consultants’, ‘freelancers’ and ‘contractors’ has grown rapidly over the past couple of years.

Are you one of these people? If you are, then I think you need to be mindful of ensuring you have the right attitude to prosper in this new arena. The approach you need to take as an employee, is very different from the one you need to take as an entrepreneur.

So even if you’ve been forced down the entrepreneurial route, resolve to fully embrace the attitude and culture. That means learning everything you can about marketing, running and administrating you new enterprise.

There’s a world of difference between being an employee and an entrepreneur, even if you’re doing fundamentally the same job.

Alternative Quote Of The Day

“I love restaurants, and that’s the thing now, they always boast about restaurants being ‘home made cooking’….I don’t want homemade cooking, that’s why I’m here! ‘cos I don’t like the rubbish at home.”

Milk Crate Farm

Restaurants across America have hit on a novel idea. Instead of buying in their vegetables from local farms, they’re growing their own on roof top gardens and bits of waste land near to their premises. How do they do that? By planting in old crates?

As you might imagine, I know nothing about growing vegetables at all, let alone the process of growing them in milk crates, but if it can be done in a busy city centre like New York or Los Angeles, it can surely be done pretty much anywhere.

Would it be possible for UK restaurant owners to ‘grow their own’ in this manner? I don’t see why not. Might it be possible for an entrepreneur without land or experience to set up a milk crate farm supplying local restaurants? Very possibly.

This would take a bit more research, but it sounds an interesting idea.
